There are dozens of ways to interpret a map. Because the style of map has a fundamental and concrete influence on your game, it's important to know your options and to choose well. Square, hex, isometric, triangular, circular, cartesian real-valued, polar real-valued, irregular, geometric, cubic, node-based, node-webbed, arbitrary, modular, shifting, random, extensible, unit-based, path-based, card-based, and so on: they create the character of the game. Choosing this sets the fundamental character of the game.
