  • The C++ Programming Language Buy new or buy used

This is the seminal book on C++, written by the creator of C++. It's not a tutorial; it's a reference. This book is something a C++ programmer should have read, but it's not something from which to learn. That said, short of the Standard or the Annotated Standard, this is as close to an authoratative reference manual there is, and unlike the standard it doesn't have the distinct feeling of having been written by UN treaty lawyers. There are a great many appropriate questions at the end of each section, which make this a viable if not an ideal manual to work from in a college course. This book is an indispensable part of a programmer's library as a reference, even if one owns the Standard, though, as it's much more readable, essentially accurate and a reasonable place to look up theory-correct behaviors.
